Brazilian Event Magazine- FESTAS

I think it is important to promote international ideas, magazine, design which is why I would like to share one of my favourite magazines for event ideas/themes.  It is called decoracao e estilo FESTAS (I just call it FESTAS).

I found the magazine when I was in Sao Paulo, Brazil last year at Livraria Cultura , a big book store on Av. Paulista.

The photographs in FESTAS are breathtaking and I will share some of the most captivating settings with you in the post below.

From my observations, sadly not first hand experience, Brazilian high-end events are adorned and stylized in lavish, rich, colourful details making use of the country’s favourable climat to sumptuously cover tables and rooms with lush flowers, fresh fruits that would make any North American event look insipid.

Unfortunately, I do not have a website to share for this magazine.  I am unable to locate it on Google but would be thrilled if someone knew the URL.

What I am able to do is share some of the event URL’s in the magazine listed under their resource section to give you some more ideas and information regarding Brazilian events.

How Fashion Influences Event Design

With French fashion week about to get underway at the end of January, I began to think about how far reaching runway trends extend around the globe.  Take event design for instance, it was not too long ago when lace was hot in fashion and we saw mainstream publications reinterpret the same trend in an event design context.   {Martha Stewart’s Weddings magazine in a warm, feminine table setting using lace }

It is exciting to see how quickly trends are picked up, exported, repackaged and executed  in events, interior design, product design and the like.

The benefit of living in a global village is that we can borrow, be inspired by and have access to all the ideas and information we like to help create our own masterpieces/unforgettable experiences when hosting events.

Stay tuned to see the new trends for Spring/Summer 2009.

Cocoa Room Dragees Revisited

What on earth is a dragee?” a friend recently asked while walking into a home accessory and gift store on a recent outing in Toronto.

She was referring to the colourful box of Cocoa Room dragees resting on the checkout counter.

If you are not familiar with dragees, they are a a type of candy that can be used as decoration, hold symbolic meaning (fertility/abundance) at an event or for pure eating pleasure.   Dragees have taken on many forms over the centuries including almonds coated in honey, sugar to the more recent Smarties-like candy coating.

The dragee downside is that they used to taste sickeningly sweet and were not very attractive.  The pastel looking almonds came with a matte finish, looked like an almond (not very imaginative) and overall, were in need of a makeover.  Exit stage left!

Enter stage right, the Cocoa Room (no drama).  This Chicago based company quietly crept onto the scene a couple years ago, glamed up the dragee colours (from matte to gloss), changed the product mix, the expanded the flavours, revamped the packaging and gave other dragee makers a run for their money.  This fabulous brand offers both monochromatic and colourful blends of chocolate covered almonds, sunflower seeds, peanuts, pistachios, dried cherries just to name a few, got the ‘O-List’ endorsement from Oprah are incredibly addictive to eat.

For more information on how to gift, buy, taste or decorate Cocoa Room dragees, check out their website.

Happy celebrating.

Purple is in for 2009; in case you haven’t heard…

If you haven’t had a chance to pick up a magazine in the past month, let me summarize what many of the fashion, home decor and interior design magazines are publishing for 2009 colour trends:  Purple is in. Period.

I couldn’t be happier.  It is one of my favourite colours and it gives me pleasure to think that event decor this year will be influenced by this passionate, cool colour on the colour spectrum.

To do my part in the event blogging sphere, I have selected a couple different images to get the creative wheels turning in your brain for all your fabulous event planning in 2009.

Fun with chocolate

Chocolate. What event is not complete with out it?

Be it a dark bar of chocolate, a thick, rich drink, a creamy cake or sugary candy, chocolate always finds to sneak itself into a party array.

I have been collecting different event ideas on how to incorporate this heavenly treat and I wanted to comment on a few of the ideas below.

First off, the chocolate dessert table.  Aesthetically it is beautiful due to the range of brown tones you have to work with (white chocolate, milk, dark etc).  Not only can you play with different types of chocolate, you also can play with different textures by mixing cakes, cookies and candies in your arrangement.  Certainly a sweet and rich way to end an evening or act as the centerpiece for a dessert focused party.

Next, the chocolate gift.  Some people like giving their guests something to remember at the end of an evening.  While this tends to be a common practice in weddings, there is no reason why you can’t reward your friends after you throw a cool dinner party or afternoon tea.  Giving truffles are simple but where the creativity comes in is making your own boxes with a message under each ball.  Look at this example used for a wedding:

Lastly, who would not enjoy looking at the beauty of technological advances in the chocolate industry that has allowed chocolatiers to create works of art with chocolate?  Think: Voges Chocolate, Noka Chocolate, Joseph Schmidt, Max Brenner, Soma Chocolate and Coca Bella
